Abstract | LOFAR (LOw Frequency ARray) is a new radio telescope concept involving a network of radio-telescope stations. The LOFAR network is under construction by ASTRON - Institute of the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research - in the Netherlands operating between 10 and 240 MHz. As a predecessor to the Square Kilometer Array (SKA) planned to be constructed after 2015, it has a broad impact on the future of radio astronomy and astrophysics that goes well beyond the current project. In this largely unexplored frequency range, LOFAR will be the dominant telescope over the next decade. LOFAR is the first telescope of this new sort, using an array of simple omni-directional antennas instead of mechanical signal processing with a dish antenna. LOFAR is an emerging European sensor network of continental dimensions for space and earth observations. There are currently discussions with research institutions in Germany, UK, Italy, France, Poland and Sweden, aiming the installation of LOFAR stations in these countries. These partnerships will extend the Wide Area Sensor Network and the resolution and sensitivity of the system LOFAR in Europe. Such as in Europe there are researchers at the Southern Regional Space Research Center - CRS/INPE MCT and in the Federal University of Santa Maria - UFSM, in Santa Maria, RS, South of Brazil, studying the possibility to install LOFAR stations in the site of the Southern Space Observatory - SSO/CRS/INPE-MCT, (29.4°S, 53.8°W, 480 m), in São Martinho da Serra, RS, Brazil, which is approximately 54 Km distant far from Santa Maria. For that, the radio interference in the Electromagnetic Spectrum in the same band of operation of LOFAR stations has been monitored since 1992. The monitoring results have demonstrated that the characteristics of the Electromagnetic Spectrum in the SSO have similar conditions like the European LOFAR stations. For monitoring the interference level at the Observatorys site it is perfomed the periodic data acquisition on the radio frequency range 10-240MHz. The procedures to determine the radio noise level were realized using one spectrum analyzer and an omnidirectional antenna. The methodology of data acquisitions was to amplify the signal from the antenna, then evaluate this signal in one spectrum analyzer, through a GPIB. The data is instantly transmitted from SSO to the Radio Frequency and Telecommunication Laboratory at the Southern Regional Space Research Center - CRS/INPE - MCT, in Santa Maria, RS, for further analysis and store, allowing the monitoring of the Electromagnetic Spectrum power for long periods. It is concluded that the SSOs site is electromagnetic compatible with that of the LOFAR systems. Therefore, it has been considered the possibilities to implement the construction of some LOFAR stations, similar to the Europeans, at the Southern Space Observatory. |
