ABSTRACT: In this work the orbit determination problem of a low orbit earth artificial satellite is analyzed. This kind of problem can be solved by several ways, and the choice depends on the hardware available in the spacecraft and in the ground station. In this work this problem is solved using the GPS (Global Positioning System) constellation satellites data. This system is composed of an Earth orbiting satellites group with the purpose of sending signals to be received by receivers that can be located in the space or in the ground. These information allow the receiver to calculate its own position. It's assumed that the target satellite (which orbit has to be determined) will carry a receptor of this kind, specially designed to work in the space environment. To perform this work, one needs the following steps: i) To simulate the motion of the GPS and the target satellite; ii) To calculate ali the distances between the GPS satellites and the target satellite; iii) To determine which GPS satellites are visible by the target satellite; iv) To corrupt those data by adding a random variable; v) To develop a software, that is able to get a navigation solution on each point of the orbit, using least squares theory; vi) To develop a new software to get the target satellite state vector (position and velocity) from the navigation solution, also using least squares theory. This work was motivated by the INPE's plans of performing this kind of mission in a near future, since this is a cheap and accurate orbit determination system. It must be emphasized that the goal of this work is not to provide the system maximum accuracy, but a sufficient accuracy to track and control the satellite. |
