| Resumo | The Brazil-Malvinas Confluence (BMC) region is known as one of the most energetic zones of the World Ocean, and it has a strong influence on the Planetary Boundary Layer over the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean. This oceanic region is characterized by the convergence of distinct water masses. The Brazilian Current, salty and warm, meets the cold fresh Malvinas Current over that region and origins the BMC. This convergence is marked by the strong vertical and horizontal gradients and temperature surface anomalies. From multi-years of in situ observations, our results show that the marine atmospheric boundary layer (MABL) at the BMC region is modulated by the strong sea surface temperature (SST) gradients present at the sea surface. The mean MABL structure is thicker over the warm side of the BMC where Brazil Current (BC) waters predominate. The opposite occurs over the cold side of the confluence where waters from the Malvinas (Falkland) Current (MC) are found. This study also investigates the dynamics and thermodynamics of the ocean and atmosphere at the BMC region and their relationship with the high latitude environment. The connections between high and mid latitudes might be the cause of the temperature and current anomalies generation and maintenance on the Southwestern Atlantic. The numerical modelling and reanalysis data analysis revealed two distinct behaviours with positive and negative sea temperature anomalies. The first is caused by local flow coming from south, which appeared in reply to atmospheric circulation that blocked the upwelling of cold waters next to the continental slope. For the negative case, the numerical simulation and reanalysis diverged in determinate how thermodynamic processes were involved in the formation of these anomalies. However, the local forcing, for both cases, is related to downwelling and upwelling processes in the study region. Changes in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current and in the Drake Strait apparently are contributing for the BMC's variability. |
