Abstract | The main objective of this work is to present an overview of an International effort for scientific cooperation and development of Aeronomic studies, focusing the region of the South Atlantic Magnetic Anomaly SAMA. For the study of the SAMA the SOUTH AMERICAN RIOMETER NETWORK-SARINET (developed at University of Takushoku, Japan) is part of the diagnostic instrumentation of an international cooperation between Japan, Brazil, Argentine and Chile. The first riometer was installed in 1999 in the Southern Space Observatory - SSO/CRS/INPE MCT (29.4°S, 53.8°W) São Martinho da Serra, Brazil, strategically located near the SAMA center, around 23000 nT. Four other riometers were installed under and close to the SAMA region: in Punta Arenas and Concepcion, in Chile, in Trelew and CASLEO in Argentina, later, 2009, in Atibaia, Palmas, Manaus, in Brazil, and finally, in 2010, in Comandante Ferraz, Antarctica. For 2010/2011 in Pilar, La Plata and La Quiaca in Argentina and in São Jose dos Campos, Goiania and Natal in Brazil, completing the SARINET. The behavior of the lower ionosphere is studied with the SOUTH AMERICA VLF NETWORK-SAVNET, with stations in SSO, Atibaia and São José dos Campos, Brazil, CASLEO, Argentina and in the Antarctic by analyzing the VLF (Very Low Frequency: 3-30 kHz) wave propagation over long distances within the Earth-ionosphere waveguide. The INPE SKIYMET METEOR RADAR NETWORK studies atmospheric dynamics using the ionized trails left by meteors when entering the atmosphere, resulting from the friction between meteor surface and atmospheric molecules. Measurements of echo delay, doppler shift and arrival angle make it possible to determine meteor trail location and motion. The network operates at three locations in Brazil: São João do Cariri, Cachoeira Paulista and Santa Maria, providing 24-hour data on upper atmosphere winds between 80 and100 km. Airglow intensities observations are monitored with photometers and CCD cameras at INPEs SSO and are carried out on 12-13 nights around new moon periods, when weather conditions permitted. A digisonde for HF ionospheric sounding to contribute for a better performance of ground and space-based radio monitoring and communication systems at the SAMA region will be installed in Santa Maria in 2011. |
