Resumo | The Global Muon Detector Network (GMDN) provides important information that can be used in Space Weather forecasting. Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) may cause relevant variations in galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) intensities observed at the Earth, due to the formation of strong shock that travels slower that GCRs. This variation can be observed typically up to 4 hours ahead shock arrival. The National Institute for Space Research (INPE) participates in GMDN through a Multi-directional Muon Detector (MMD), operated at the Southern Space Observatory -SSO/CRS/INPE-MCT, in São Martinho da Serra, RS, Brazil. This detector measures secondary particles (muons) intensities at different directions, that are produced by interactions of primary GCRs with Earth´s upper atmosphere. However, muon counts can be affected also by environmental factors at the time of measure, like temperature and atmospheric pressure. The latter factor isone of the most relevant, and shows inversely proportional exponential relation to muon counting, i.e., the lower the pressure at the moment of measurement, higher muon counting is observed. In order to avoid the influence of barometric pressure, it is applied on every directional channel a different correction factor to the observed raw muon counts. A set of different barometric coefficients (betas) is used to calibrate muon counts measured by a MMD. So far, these values are calculated using a non-systematic semi-manual procedure, that may provide good estimatives, but does not guarantee the best possible values are obtained. In this work we propose an algorithm to automatically estimate the best possible values for barometric coefficients on every directional channel of a MMD. The proposed method initially discards all muon counts measured on days with sunspot number different from zero, in order to try to eliminate variations on countings due to solar activity. After that, the remaining counts are grouped by temperature step, so all measurements made at similar temperatures form a group where temperature influence is minimized. For each of these groups, the variance of muon counts related to barometric pressure is calculated. A high value of variance is desired for a group to be selected for beta estimation, since a more reliable linear regression can be applied. So, the winner group of measures that will be used in beta estimation will show simultaneously minimal influence on muons counts because of solar activity and temperature, and it will present muon counts well scattered along a wide range of atmospheric pressure values. Using those selected measures, the linear least squares method is applied and the angular coefficient from the best linear fit is calculated. At this moment, an angular coefficient equals to zero would indicate independence of muon counts due to atmospheric pressure variation. The raw muon counts are then calibrated using initially an arbitrary value of beta and the angular coefficient of best linear fit is calculated again. This step is repeated iteratively towards angular coefficient reduction, using different values of beta, until the angular coefficient value is zero. This algorithm was implemented computationally using Java programming language accessing a relational database, used to store and retrieve muon counts and environmental data, through Hibernate framework. Our approach was implemented and tested on MMD at SSO, showing relevant results that, for some directional channels, leaded to significantly different values when compared to the corresponding ones obtained using previous non-systematic procedure. |
